Our Story

My name is Jacob, and I started ByteByByte because I looked at the tech tutoring landscape and saw a gap that needed to be filled by someone who has actually been through the experience of learning assistive technology themselves.

My journey started back in middle school when I was receiving tech tutoring from a remote technology company. It was helpful, but I always wanted more options. I wanted the ability to learn different free and open-source software rather than being locked into just Windows and JAWS.

When you learn from someone who uses the same tools you use every day, the instruction is different. It is practical. It is honest. It accounts for the quirks and the workarounds that no tutorial covers. This is not theoretical knowledge. It is lived experience. This website itself is built to be fully accessible and tested with NVDA, JAWS, and VoiceOver.

The second reason I started ByteByByte is to share my knowledge with the world about accessible technology and to provide an easy pathway for anyone who wants to use their devices more efficiently.

Yes, ByteByByte is a for-profit business. But the goal is to make the path to accessible technology easier and to remove barriers that keep people from discovering free and open-source tools.

Thank you for being here. I look forward to speaking with you.
